Darren Bates is a Brandeis University baseball player who previously played for Columbus Academy’s varsity team. In addition to baseball, Darren Bates also played for the school’s football team and served as a volunteer football coach with Columbus’ Second and Seven Foundation.
Founded by former Ohio State University football players Luke Fickell, Mike Vrabel, and Ryan Miller, the Second and Seven Foundation promotes literacy to young students through book donations and its use of student athletes as positive role models. The foundation also operates an annual football camp for children between the ages of seven and 14. The 19th annual camp, presented by Huntington, is scheduled for June 25 to 27 at Hilliard Weaver Middle School.
Youth attending the camp receive an official camp shirt as well as instruction from local high school coaches, NFL players, and Ohio State Buckeye alumni. In addition to teaching fundamental drills, the camp includes fun contests and guest talks with an emphasis on important aspects of individual and group success such as teamwork, goal-setting, commitment, and positivity. Registration costs $125 until April 30 and $150 afterward.
